This is a request for a second letter of protest from Labourstart Canada to apply pressure to the Olympic Committee to drop Rio Tinto a labour rights abuser (they produce the metal that goes into the medals). The letter is going to Marcel Aubut, President of the Canadian Olympic Committee as it is to be the host city for the International Olympic Committee which coincides with Workers from Rio Tinto gathering to make there voices heard.
Marcel Aubut
President
Canadian Olympic Committee
Dear Mr Aubut:
We the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) stand in Solidarity with the Workers from Rio Tinto Alcan in Alma who will be gathering in Quebec City between May 23rd – 25th to make their voices heard and support their calls for their employers to be thrown off the Olympic Podium for their labour and Union rights abuses.
We understand that Quebec City will be the host city of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and call on you to act immediately to prevent embarrassment to Canada and its athletes who may reach the Olympic Podium.
Rio Tinto the official supplier of metal used in creating the Olympic medals have been involved in serious violations of Olympic ideals by declaring an illegal lockout of 780 Union members who are fighting for job security for future generations, which is why we insist you help lift the dark shadow that is being cast over the Olympics by publicly showing your support for the Workers, helping to throw Rio Tinto off the Olympic Podium and having the medals recast so as they are not tarnished by a company that disregards the very principles of social responsibility embraced by the IOC.
Yours Sincerely,
Andy Smith, International Solidarity Liaison Officer
